Hiking: Avenue of the Trees
I find myself in Portland a handful of times a year to visit family and friends. One of the places that I've always wanted to visit was Forest Park. It's name is appropriate given that it is over twenty miles long and completely forested. There are a number of trail heads and offshoots from the primary trail named the Wildwood Trail.
I didn't have that much time and energy, so I picked a smaller loop called the Avenue of the Trees. I accessed it by following Burnside into the hill until it becomes Skyline Boulevard and then following it along the ridge until coming across NW Springville Drive (keep your eyes peeled, its inconspicuous). A few hundred yards down the drive is a parking turnout and the trailhead.
The trail is very wide, hence the avenue. The track we took was about an hour and a half journey with some easy-to-moderate inclines. Being there in the fall was truly magnificent, painted with every hue in the fall palette. Of course there are many other trails, but this is a fun one that won't take the entire day.
