Sprout Comes Out

Peru Maxine Carberry

With much ado, I announce the birth of my daughter, Peru Maxine, on December 29th, the year 2008. Her birth weight was 7 pounds 1 ounce, and she measured 19 inches. She arrived the day after her projected due date and was delivered at home as planned... well, not exactly.

You generally hear of 36 hour labors, where pre-labor pains are easily managed and couples get to bond and spend time taking walks, dancing, cooking meals, etc. Well, when Melanie's contractions came, they came on strong! Her waters broke just before 2 a.m. and her contractions were 7-8 minutes apart. By around 4 a.m. they were 3-5 minutes. I frantically phoned our midwives, doula, and labor tub delivery to get there pronto. Around 6 a.m. the crew arrived and announced that Melanie was dilated 9 centimeters. Just after 8 a.m. she was pushing Sprout out - and we hadn't even finished filling the labor tub (needless to say, we didn't use the tub). At 11:48 a.m., 10 hours later, Sprout was born into my very hands.

I am so very proud of my wife for her strength and resolve while enduring natural child labor. It was undoubtedly one of the most powerful experiences of our lives. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the midwives at Seattle Home Maternity Service (Marge Mansfield, Heather Chorley, and Kate (who's last name I regret I don't recall)) and our doula Carrie Kenner (Big Belly Services), all who's professional guidance, words of empowerment, and support we could not have done without. I would highly recommend their services to anyone considering natural home birth.

We are now happily nesting with our daughter and enjoying our new roles as parents. Our sleep patterns have changed dramatically, we spend a lot of time dealing with dirty diapers, and getting motivated to leave the house is a time consuming effort, but now we are a new family. Somehow that thought makes it all seem worthwhile. I am smitten with my darling daughter and await all the wonders we will share together.

Well it is about time

Hi to both of you, no make that the 3 of you. I am glad that you recognize that your lives have changed forever because you have no idea yet. Celia and I both have been wondering when or has it happened. We kept our laptop e-mail clean each day as we left town on Dec 11 and returned on the 29th. Quite a trip and a wonderful story which I may get around to writing some day as it got pretty interesting on a few occasions.

We would love to play the part of the three wise men, would you settle for two old cranks? We would love to visit Peru and both of you too. Let us know when the coast is clear and we shall stumble by. Anyway I knew you guys could do it and we are both happy things came out perfectly.
love to all
Celia and Jim
