Shuffling Through Georgetown

The Friendship bus in Georgetown, DC

I came to DC for a memorial service, but stuck around for a couple of days to take in the city. The small amount of time I spent trying to navigate in a car was enough for me to forsake driving there ever again. The Metro, however, was a breeze - exactly like BART in the Bay Area, and so easy to get around the city in! The first evening after Uncle Jim's memorial service, Mel, my parents and I walked to Georgetown from Foggy Bottom station. It was more or less like any other college town, but with older buildings. For instance, on one of the side streets my father and I found a house that was built from bricks that were used as ballast for British cargo ships in the early 1800's.

We pretty much walked the length of it. The shopping was anywhere USA, but there were some unique bars and funky side streets to enjoy. On the way back, we crossed the canal below M street at Francis Scott Key park and followed it back in the opposite direction. Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped at a pub and I tried their local lager, Yuengling. It was okay, but had a metallic aftertaste which I attributed to the water supply. It is probably blasphemous for me to say that, being that they claim to be "America's oldest brewery", but everyone is entitled to their opinion. It was hot and muggy, so even a mediocre beer hit the spot.
